This patinated metal ashtray was designed by Dr. Seuss around 1940.
It features a figure known as "Nuzzlepuss" and the inscription "Official Seal Seuss Navy".
The "Seuss Navy" was a humorous concept launched by Dr. Seuss in 1936 for the Essomarine booth at the National Motorboat Show.
Visitors to the booth could sign up as "admirals" and receive diplomas, often being photographed with cardboard Dr. Seuss characters.
