CJ Johnson Western Works 19th Century Bowie Knife
CJ Johnson Western Works 19th Century Bowie KnifeChristopher Johnson & Co. Western Works" bowie in very good to excellent condition, with normal patina and some carbonization normal for a knife over 120-140 years old. Made in Sheffield England in the mid to late 1800s. Christopher Johnson & Co was founded in 1858 and was located at 207-223 Portobello Street, Sheffield England, from 1868 until the mid-1950s when it was bought by Wostenholm and the factory was shut down. There is no Country reference (England) on the blade indicating it was made before the 1890s. Clip point carbon blade is 6 inches long with an overall length of 10 inches. The Blade is full tang. The blade is stamped (horizontally) “Christopher Johnson & Co. Western Works, Sheffield. The ricasso is stamped with the with their proof mark logo, the initials “CJ” inside a flag and the word “Johnson Western Works” The handle scales are genuine stag affixed to the tang by 8 silver or brass pins (4 pins on each side. The brass guard is intact and tight (no wobble). I believe it is the original frog leather sheath consistent with the style of sheaths for that period
